Drawing on the RBSA Collection - Dry Media 1822-2022 February 29-April 7 2024

Drawing on the RBSA collection - Dry media 1822-2022

FEBRUARY 29 - APRIL 7 Royal Birmingham Society of Artists' Gallery, 4 Brook Street, Birmingham, B3 1SA

https://rbsa.org.uk/event/drawing-on-the-rbsa-collection/

I have a pastel painting entitled 'Winter at the Chase' (Cannock Chase) in this exhibition. In 2022 I exhibited 6 pastels of landscapes for the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists' Members to consider and vote on. I was successful, and donated one of my six artworks to the RBSA permanent collection. https://rbsa.org.uk/about-us/collection/ This artwork is currently exhibited as part of this exhibition.

‘Drawing with dry media is as old as mankind.  Ochre and charcoal dust were blown through straws onto cave walls by the first artists.  In more recent times, the dry media of pencil, pastel, and charcoal were favoured by travelling artists as ideal for drawing with minimum of fuss on site in sketchbooks or portfolios.  Drawing was the means through which European artists recorded, prepared, studied, and imagined, and it was often a prelude to painting or engraving.  Dry media were also central to art training and versatile both en plein air and in the studio.’

Artists in Conversation: Saturday 23 March 2.00 – 3.00pm Join me in conversation with Brendan Flynn, Professor of Art History, when we talk about ‘Winter at the Chase’.

'The RBSA is proud to present the first ever RBSA Drawing Prize. This show exhibits great draughtsmanship and celebrates all forms of drawing. Drawing has been practised by humans since the Stone Age and has developed as a form of visual communication and artistic expression ever since. Featuring 128 works from 96 artists, RBSA Drawing Prize exhibition showcases the best of contemporary drawing with the inclusion of both established and emerging artists. A wide range of styles, techniques, and practices are on display, including traditional mark making, digital drawing, performance drawing, sculptural drawing, and more.'

'To be there' - new solo exhibition of pastel landscapes at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Gallery, opening Tuesday 17 August 2021

'To be there'

Solo Exhibition

Royal Birmingham Society of Artists - ground floor

17 August – 3 October 2021

Linda Nevill would love to be in any of these landscapes again whether in sunshine or snow, on a clifftop overlooking the sea or high in the hills.  These are her responses to a range of landscapes evoking memories of, amongst other things, the softness of heather, the searing heat on the coastal path, the tingling of ice and the crunching of footsteps in snow.

Working in all weathers to make plein air sketches and studies she works with these and photographs to create finished pieces.

For this exhibition she has worked with vibrant soft pastels

Japanese-themed life and costume drawing

A few of the 9 drawings created in a Japanese-themed, costumed and life drawing session.

Pen and ink is good to use when the pose is only 2 minutes long. When there's longer, pastel is possible too, especially on a coloured, textured paper. I tried out some Khadi paper for the first time with pastels. I didn't have long for any of the poses - I added more pastel to the portrait head afterwards.

Very enjoyable with the dramatic lighting, differently applied make up on the model and different poses - must do more!
